On the hunt for a high-performing tyre for wet roads? Uniroyal is the obvious choice. This highly-respected brand - now a part of Continental - has long been a byword for "rain tyres" (or "wet tyres") offering optimal levels of performance. The company is highly active in the rain tyre segment, with constant research into new innovations and the frequent introduction of pioneering new products to the market. The Uniroyal MS Plus 77 is no exception: its prominent central tread grooves collect water and evacuate it via the high number of smaller lateral grooves that run into the shoulder area of the tyre, offering excellent protection against aquaplaning.
Since the MS Plus 77 is a winter tyre, it is also required to cope well with other wintry weather conditions. Its rubber compound is designed to remain flexible at low temperatures and to maintain good traction by biting into snowy or icy roads. An abundance of sipes affords the tyre a sufficient number of gripping edges, which contribute to the creation of traction as well as breaking through the thin layer of water atop icy roads to improve the tyre's grip. A sipe spreader creates cavities in the grooves, in which snow and ice can be temporarily stored to avoid them causing the tyre to slide.
The tread blocks of the Uniroyal MS Plus 77 experience low rates of deformity under pressure and contribute to high cornering stability. This is especially important for sporty vehicles, which tend to take corners at faster speeds. Depending on its exact dimensions, the MS Plus 77 can be driven at speeds of up to 240 km (149 miles) per hour. Tested by ADAC in 2013, it achieved good scores across all categories, with a particularly high rating for its performance on snow. Also noted were the low rates of fuel consumption resulting from its low rolling resistance.
