The Mercedes empire is thought to have been named after the daughter of a man named Emil Jellinek, who traded cars at the beginning of the 20th century and participated in motor races under his daughter's name. The Daimler Motor Company later adopted Mercedes as a product name: Daimler-Benz AG - and with it, the brand Daimler-Benz - came into being as the result of a merger in 1926.
